Why Your Child Needs An Influenza Jab Before School Starts

Recently the Ministry of Education has announced that school will reopen on the 20th of January 2021. While some parents are scrambling to prepare their children’s textbooks, school bag, stationaries, school uniforms…some parents are still hesitant to even start preparing the school essentials, with the rising number of COVID cases.

Apart from thinking about the Back To School essentials, another important thing to think about is whether our child’s vaccination is up to date? Now would be a good idea to have a look at your child’s vaccination card and see if there are any vaccinations that he/she have missed or have not taken. INFLUENZA vaccine might be one of them.

Reasons your child needs an influenza jab before school starts:

Here are some reasons why you should highly consider this vaccine NOW before school starts.

The clearest reason is that it PROTECTS your child from having Influenza infection-which can cause severe complications such as lung infection (Pneumonia), dehydration, asthma attacks and even ICU admission.

During this 3rd wave of COVID-19, the last thing that we want to have is any form respiratory tract symptoms, even the mild ones such as cough, runny nose, fever and sore throat. Influenza infection does have an OVERLAP of symptoms with COVID 19 and we wouldn’t want any unnecessary swab tests, would we?

It takes 2 WEEKS for adequate antibodies to develop after the jab is given. If your child has never received the Influenza vaccine and is less than 9 years old, immunity will only develop after the 2nd dose, hence more reasons to not delay it.

It is SAFE. Put aside the South Korean Flu vaccine scare that we heard last year. The National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) has assured us that the vaccine is indeed safe to be used.

Stock is still widely available and currently we are administering latest Flu vaccine for this current season. We will never know when the next Influenza outbreak will occur again, and now would be a good time before the Influenza vaccine shortage occurs like how it was the beginning of 2020.

The COVID vaccine is currently NOT licensed to be used in children below 16. Hence, the least that you could do is ensure that your children receive the Flu shot which is safe to be used from 6 months old onwards.

‼️ P/S: While getting your child to be vaccinated, it would also be wise to get ourselves vaccinated to protect ourselves against Influenza too. Get your vaccination this month at Sunway Specialist Centre Damansara and make sure all your kids are up to date with their Influenza vaccines.
