An inguinal hernia is formed when the inguinal canal is not fully closed prior to birth, leaving an opening where a piece of bowel or ovary may become trapped in it. It is usually present as a bulge in the groin area, and may worsen if more tissues push through the opening as it becomes weaker and wider over time. Hence it is recommended to treat children with inguinal hernias immediately to minimize the risk of further complications.
